Could someone please tell me the best email service for use in Hungary?
Is AOL the least expensive service or are there local services available?

Any help you can provide would be most appreciated.

I am not quite sure if AOL is available in HUngary. Compu$erve
certainly is, but there are quite few real Internet Access Providers.
EuNet Hungary, for example, charges HUF 4000 a month for full modem
dialap access, plus HUF 500 per hour if you use international links.
See them at http://www.eunet.hu

So why do I get the messages? I want to go away!
 Dear list-owner or somebody, help!
+ - Re: Email in Hungary (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

See "Hungarian Commercial On-Line Services" posted to Usenet just two
days ago, also available from John Horvath >, or on the
WWW page in my signature.
Incidentally, I'm going to take my well-deserved break from this list
shortly, so anyone who wants me to answer something should write me
personally (or post to soc.culture.magyar). I will continue to send the
"Hungarian email pointer" (the updated - but yet unreleased - version of
which has reference to the comm-providers doc mentioned above) here.

Hi Paul!

There is indeed a national holiday in Hungary on Aug. 20th.

Enclosed, please find recommendations that I usually give to my friends.
Please afterward, let me know how your vacation went.

Since you have mentioned that you will visit Hungary. this is the letter
that I usually give to people before they go:
You are going to visit Hungary soon.
As you know I was born there and keep in touch with a few people, who still
live there. Also occasionally I visit the Hungarian capitol.
Here are a number of things for you to choose from.

Interests of secular intonations:
Hal=E1sz B=E1stya. A lattice-like stone structure, a stronghold erected in t=
he
Middle Ages on the top of the mountain with a panoramic view of the entire
city. Beautiful walk in the afternoon. Good and expensive restaurants
there, with local fare. Also pastry shop. Take camera.
Sz=E9pm=FCv=E9szeti M=FAzeum. One of the most outstanding collections of art=
 in
Europe, in the Varosliget.
Opera. The opera house is built in the style of the Scala of Milan. First
rate performances. Get tickets early.
V=E1r. The castle of many generations of kings. Some parts are always open.
find out which and when.
Ship ride on the Danube. Usually a short excursion with meals.
M=E1ty=E1s Pince. Across from the Intercontinental Hotel. Authentic Hungari=
an
food with Gypsy music and lots of local color. Expensive.
Margit Sziget. An island in the middle of the Danube and the middle of the
city. Beautifully cared for greenery, old ruins, tennis courts, thermal
water, swimming possibilities, polo, boating etc. If you just walk around
it---even that is satisfactory.
Open air concerts. Not free, but very reasonable.
Gerbaud, or V=F6r=F6smarty Cukr=E1szda. A gigantic side walk cafe with the =
best
pastries in the world. When I was there last, the price was about one to
two dollars a piece of splendid pastries. Here one sits at tiny tables on
the wide sidewalk and watches the world and its people to walk by.
V=E1ci utca. The Rodeo Drive of Budapest. For shopping--only the embroidery
is unusual.

Interests of Jewish emphasis:
Dohany Synagogue, a functioning temple, more than a century and a half old,
built in the Moorish design, 5000 capacity. Presently under construction,
but still worth seeing.
Jewish Museum, Sip-utca 12. Magnificent Jewish artifacts exhibited,
testifying of Jewish existence in the region with bona fide items from the
Roman era on.
Hanna Kosher Restaurant, Kazinczy utca. An age-old kosher kitchen, where
one can meet and mingle with the religious Jews of Hungary.
Shalom Kitchen on Kazinczi Ter. A more modern kosher restaurant to meet
other tourists.
Look for Jewish content productions at the Goldmark Hall. The theater-like
room has occasional concerts, lectures, with Jewish content, Israeli
connection etc.
The Anna Frank Gimnazium. Jewish high school that survived 40 years of
communism.
The Rabbi Seminarium. Jozsef korut. Here you have to have an appointment.
Holocaust Museum in the Var, in Buda.
...........................................................................
..........................................................................

I would like, please if you would call me after you have returned, to tell
me what you have found there.
With best regards,

Gisela
