The First international environmental lawsuit ever is starting next 
Monday. A
week from today, next Tuesday, every newspaper, radio and TV station of 
the
World will be reporting on the Danube lawsuit.

Please use the remaining week to prepare for this date: the 4th of 
March!

Have your position papers, press releases and letters to the editors 
ready.
Use this week to make sure that you have the e-mail, fax or snail-mail
addresses of the papers you read, the names of their editors, the 
addresses
of the radio/TV stations you listen to, the names of the people you 
want to
contact there, and most importantly; organise your thoughts, research 
your
facts, have your letter ready to be mailed first thing next Tuesday.

new president in the person of the outstanding American law-professor:

If you plan to take part in the environmentalist picket on Carnegie 
Plein, in
front of the International Court of Justice, please make sure that your 
signs
show respect and trust in the ICJ. They must show that the 
environmentalists
resp[ect the international legal system and consider the individual 
judges as
our allies. It must be clear to all, that the demonstration is not 
directed
against the ICJ, but against the stalinist gigantomania of the 
construction
lobbies, and against the illegal acts of non-democratic governments. 
Please
keep the picket totally silent and let our position papers do the 
talking.

AMERICAN PROFESSOR WILL PRESIDE OVER THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL 
ENVIRONMENTAL
LAWSUIT OF THE PLANET

Today the representatives of Hungary arrived in The Hague.
They are:
Gyorgy Szenasi, who represents the Hungarian Government.
The attorneys are:
prof. James Crawford of Cambridge
prof. Boldizsar Nagy of ELTE
prof. Laszlo Valki of ELTE 

The Slovak delegation has not arrived yet because of last minute
resignations. The original delegation was:
 Peter Tomka, who represents the Slovak Government.
The Attorneys are (not finalized):
Prof. Derek Bowett of Cambridge resigned on February 26, 1997
Rosalyn Higgins (due to a higher appointment) resigned

This week the International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced the final
schedule for the Danube lawsuit. The ICJ will hear the Hungarian side
(supported by the environmental NGOs) on the week of March 3, 1997. 
Because
Slovakia asked for more time, their presentation was moved to the week 
of
March 21. On the week of March 31, all the judges, including ICJ's 
newly
elected president, Professor Stephen Schwebel, will take an 
unprecedented
trip to the Danube site. They will see the Szigetkoz (Island Region), 
where
there are no islands left and where the villages receive their drinking 
water
in plastic bags.

By the fall, the court will decide, if Hungary had the right to back 
out of
the Soviet imposed 1977 contract, (which she signed with the no longer
existing Czechoslovakia) and if Slovakia had the right to move the 
border
river onto her territory and to keep all the electricity made while 
causing
environmental damage. The ICJ has accepted a joint NGO memorial from 
nine
international environmental organizations, which argue that national
governments should not have the sole right to decide on the destiny of 
such
environmental treasures as these wetlands, which evolved from the delta 
of
the Pannon Sea at the end of the last Ice Age.

        Nekem azert az az erzesem, hogy ma az USA-ban talan egy kicsit

igazad
lehet, hogy tobb szutykot bocsatanak ki mint pl. India v. Kina, holott
lelekszamban lemaradnak ezen orszagok mogott. (Bar egy tanulmany 
szerint pl.
az uveghazhatasban a CO2-nel jobb hatasfokkal kozremukodo metan es 
ammonia,
a harmadik vilag rizsfoldjeirol, es allataibol jon elsosorban.)

Viszont valtozott az eletszinvonal. Tobb furdoszoba, mosogep, auto,

merteku szennyezest, mint a haboru elotti szinten. Azonos letfeltetelek
mellett nyilvan a szennyezes is hasonlo. Tehat most is oda jutunk: 
keves
ember sokat szennyezhet, sok ember keveset (egy fore szamolva). Hulye 
pelda
de talan ide jo: ha mindenki hetente egyszer furdik max. 10 l vizben,
detergensek hasznalata nelkul es tiszta ruhaja legfeljebb kethavonta 
van,
akkor kissebb a vizek szennyezettsege. Ez mukodik, te pl. probaltad ezt 
a
kornyezetvedelmet? S ha nem, csak nem azert nem mert kenyelmetlen 
lenne?
Ezzel mindenki igy van.
 De egy adott nepessegszam felett, mar ez "vedomodszer" sem hasznal. A 
sok
10 l viz jelenti az osszes folyot stb...

Ez OK. Nyilvan torekedni kell a erre is, de a nepessegszabalyozas 
nelkul nem
sokat er a dolog. Sulyozni kell mire forditjuk a figyelmet. (Nyilvan
csokkentem az utca zajszintjet azzal ha gumitalpu cipoben jarok, de nem
ennek kene a focsapasnak lennie.)
