  Visa reintroduction debated

  Since prime minister Gyula Horn announced last Thursday that the
  government may reintroduce visa requirements for certain neighbouring
  countries the issue has dominated the political scene.

  The three concerned neighbours, Ukraine, Romania and Yugoslavia, all
  expressed surprise, and said they would also require visas from
  Hungarians. Representatives of the ethnic Hungarians in the three
  countries strongly protested against the planned move saying that it
  would affect Hungarians beyond the borders the worst, as they would
  be virtually cut off from Hungary, or at least their regular contacts
  with relatives would be seriously hindered.

  Both the Interior Ministry and the Foreign Ministry cautioned against
  any quick decision and the two ministries are currently reviewing the
  possible effects of reintroduced visas. Interior Minister Gabor
  Kuncze stressed that other alternatives, such as stricter controls,
  must be considered to cut down on foreign illegal workers and black
  marketeers. Foreign minister Laszlo Kovacs, also criticised the plan
  and told the radio on Friday that no decision is to be expected soon.

  By the end of the week it seemed less and less likely that Horn's plan
  would indeed be realised in the near future. According to
  Nepszabadsag, even if the government does decide in September at its
  first meeting to reintroduce visa requirements, preparations would
  then take three months.

than in fact. I am not aware of having substantial problems, nor do I
recall *ever* having blamed "Hungarians" for the problems I've actually had.

partly my own responsibility, such as being overweight and suffering
physical problems as a result, a difficulty involving property where I
put the blame squarely in the court of an ex-partner who is Australian
by birth but all of whose grandparents were born in Greece and a number
of other problems which were connected with bureaucratic twits in a
number of countries other than Hungary. 

So I'd be interested to here from you --- or anyone else who is as
impeccably informed as you seem to be about my psyche ---  to know:

This is hardly an instance of ignorance. "Innocence is not knowing.
There is nothing wrong with that. Ignorance is not wanting to know,
and that is a crime". Julius Sumner Miller once said that, or something
very like it. 

You may in fact be ignorant. I do not know. I tend to presume
otherwise, unless I have reason to believe so. But you are
certainly better placed than I to know whether you are ignorant.
Keep contributing, or write to me directly and maybe I'll come
to be in a position to form an opinion.

My inclination is to presume otherwise with people I don't yet know.
But I shall refrain from offending you and risking your wrath by
contradicting you. I'll just have to take your word for it.

Well, here I must disagree with you. As I have made it clear on
several earlier occasions, it seems to me that American is no longer
te same language as English. That is *not* to say it is inferior
or superior. The languages are obviously and historically closely
related, perhaps like Galician and Portuguese, but the differences in
syntax, grammar, spelling, usage and vocabulary are ---- in my
opinion --- sufficiently great to warrant calling them different
but related languages. I see nothing wrong with that. It is far
from unique in history that one language spawn diverging descendants.
With modern techniques of communiactrion it is even possible that
American will supplant English, but that is ot yet the case.

My advice -- unsolicited as it might be -- is to resist the temptation
to feel that because you speak and write American rather than English
you are in some way(s) inferior to someone who speaks English. I
happen to prefer English to American, but then again, I also prefer
wine to beer. That does not --- at least in my view --- make one
superior to another. Of course you might disagree, but "de gustibum
non est disputandum" (or whatever the correct Latin is), but we are
unlikely to have a debate on that.

By the way, I am somewhat disturbed by your apparent disparaging of
Hungarians. Perhaps it is just one of the differences between
American and English, but reading your posting as if it were in
English, one could easily gain the impression that you think
all people from Hungary are "low-life". Being a native of
Budapest, I consider such a view to be misplaced. If I were to
share such an opinion -- whether ill-informed or not -- I would
long ago have changed my name from "Bokor Imre". I would also
have done the same if I were aware of having the problems you
claim I do, although you have chosen to keep the knowledge of
these problems from me.

Please share your insights, and maybe you shall convince me
to anglicise my name.

They guarantee to beat all their competitors' prices. Sometimes they are
less than half of the next best deal I have been able to find and other
times, just a little cheaper - but I have never found a lower rate yet.

They have been very helpful and helped me change my address from the USA
to Finland and then back again when I moved last month.  They are very
knowledgeable about addressing mags worldwide.

know just as much as he does about this magazine stuff.  If you live
overseas, he will even call you there, as long as you are interested, but
I think he still makes all his overseas calls on the weekends, I guess

members and he does virtually no advertising- so you can email me and I
will forward your message on to him as a referral.   When I got set-up,

So your calling Hungarian society racist was in my imagination? I guess you
should take a remedial course in English. I was using extrapolation, but if
somebody with an obviously Hungarian sounding name calls Hungarians racists, it
usually isn't a sign of love.

Please. Explain it to me. I can imagine a couple of things it stands for.

Maybe. According to the New Expanded Webster's Dictionary (edited by R.F.
Patterson, M.A., D.Litt.) 1989 Edition, (ISBN 0-938261-79-X) p. 167:

Ignorance: state of being illiterate, uninformed, or uneducated, want of
knowledge.
Ignorant: wanting knowledge or information.

Innocence is something else (p. 178):
quality of being innocent, freedom from  crime or guilt, simplicity of heart.
Innocent: not noxious, or hurtful, free from guilt, simple hearted, guileless.
Free from guilt or harm, a natural or simpleton.

Maybe I am a simpleton, I don't know, I hope so. But I know I am ignorant to a 
lot of things (unlike you, I presume).

Two interesting points. I never argued the treaty reflecting the
status quo. 
I did not read any evidence of a possible Austro-Hungarian union.

I am collecting real information from people's own personal experience for a

I believe that "love conquers all" and that differences can enhance a 
relationship as much as they could be problems. My documentary will end 
with the conclusion that anything is possible where there is love... but 
it will be a much more interesting story if there is a challenge which 
the loving couple had to overcome!

Seton-Watson seems to be the trump card in the hands of Slovak and
Romanians nationalists against Hungary.  Over a year ago, Jeliko posted a 
revealing expose' on the Slovak-L list, so perhaps he would not mind doing 
the same thing for the benefit of s.c.r. and s.c.m. audience.  I found that
post fascinating.

A lenyeg a szaftban rejlik, soknak kell lennie, de megis keves zsiradekot
es vizet tartalmazzon, de legyen suru. Ezt sok hagymaval es orolt paprikaval
lehet elerni. Tehat :

Vagj aprora ket-harom nagy fej hagymat (a labas aljat boritsa 2-3 cm vas-
tagon), es adj hozza annyi zsirt/olajat/margarint, hogy mondjuk a hagyma
feleig (se) erjen. Adj hozza mar ekkor sot is.

Nagyon lassu tuzon pritsd meg a hagymat vilagos barnara vagy inkabb csak
sargasra. Ez legalabb fel oraig kell tartson, ettol esik szet a hagyma a
kesobbi fozes soran es eredmenyez jo allagu szaftot.

Ha megpirult, vedd le a labast a tuzrol es akkor add hozza az orolt papri-
kat ( a tul nagy ho hatasara megkeseredhet), legalabb ket evokanallal. 
Keverd ossze es hagyf ugy egy-ket percig, hogy a forro zsiradekban jol kiol-
dodjanak a paprika voros szinanyagai.

Ezutan add hozza a feldarabolt hust (a mondott adaghoz kb. egy kilot, vagy

Lassu tuzon, hogy rotyogjon, de ne loje le a fedot fozd, amig a hus meg nem

1: melt lard in big skillet
2: toss in 1-2 thin sliced onions
3: heat till their glossy
4: add salt, black pepper, losta mild paprika
5: slosh in 1 inch chunks of pork (cheaper, the better)
6: sear the meat 1-2 minutes per side
7: dump the meat/onion mix into a slowly boiling pot of potatoes
8: let pot simmer for 2-4 hours
9: wash up the kitchen... slice tomatoes, lettuce, pepper for salad
10: go watch tv... serve as a 1-plate thing with sour cream
11: for desert, i recommend palacsinta, szilva's gomboc, or mada'r tely

ps. for  intro i suggest bo'r leves...
