Finding unsalted pork fat may take some doing. Cut it in to 1 inch
cubes, wash it and without shaking off the water scoop it into the
*smallest, narrowest* pan that will hold it. Set it on medium high and
let it cook, uncovered. Use a fork to loosen occasionally. Eventually,
the teperto will start floating on top of the grease.(It takes a
while, but it will.) When nice and tanned lift it out with a slotted
spoon and press with another spoon to squeeze out as much fat as
possible. Drain on paper towels and if you can find a morsel or two in
30 minutes, make pogacsa.:-))
Chicken, goose, duck skin and or fat is done the same way.
Use a splatter screen if you don't want to spend the rest of your life
cleaning the stove, the wall and the cabinets........

Barna, did the article have any solid numbers on inflation in Hungary and what
the economic growth rate has been during that same two-year period?

I use Pegasus. And when I happily discovered how to make accents and
wrote about it to my girlfriend in the US, she also wrote me to for God's
sake, stop it! I don't know how come that some work and some don't.

I have Windows 3.1. It is very easy to make accents: push the quotation
mark then the letter and you get an umlauted letter, push the apostrophe
then the letter and you get a hosszu o, or i or a. Same with French or
Spanish accents. It works beautifully on print, but doesn't on E-mail.

1996 it was around 22 percent. Growths numbers are problematic
because of the "grey" or "black" or "shadow" economy : there are
no numbers available on that.

Oh, Miklos, you don't understand. This is part of dumping on Eva
Balogh who is not patriotic enough. And one of the signs of her lack of
patriotism is that in English she was talking about "fatherland" and not

I dunno how, something went wrong...

My comment was :

Maybe, I am somewhat nai:ve.

Poor Eva, if she is not patriotic enough. Is she though matriotic,
instead? That would fit to motherland.

+ - HL-ACTION LIST, Revision #16 (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

Dear Colleagues,

While we have some 60 actions in progress, I would like to give particular
emphasis to only two: signing up for HL-Action and the Danube:

SIGNING UP: If you have only 5 minutes a day, yet you want to do something
meaningful for Hungary, please send a letter to:
and in the text write: subscribe hl-action. If you do, you will receive one
fully prepared letter on every working day. This letter will already be
addressed and ready for your signature or corrections/changes and signature.
By mailing that letter you will not be talking, but will be doing
constructive work. This is the only list I have time for, you might consider
it also.

THE DANUBE: In the next weeks our total effort must be dedicated to saving
the Danube:
* The Danube lawsuit starts on the 3rd of March
* The first week will cover the oral presentation of the Hungarian side
including video illustrations of slow underground processes
* Second week will be devoted to the presentation of the Slovak side
* In early April the whole court will visit both Slovakia and the devastated
Szigetkoz
* Specifics can be obtained from:
       1) our web-site: http://www.goodpoint.com/duna.htm
       2) Data on environmental damage can be obtained:
either from the Hungarian Minister for the Environment, Ferenc Baja at:
  or from:
Gyorgy Szenasi, Hungary's representative to the ICJ at:

       3) The position of the Slovak government and construction lobby,
represented by Miroslav Liska can be obtained from:

Dear Friends. We have only a few days before the first international
environmental lawsuit starts. We want it to set a precedent. We want it to
become the first step in restoring not only the Danube wetlands, but in
restoring mankinds right to overrule national governments when they destroy
our common natural treasures. To win this fight, we need powerful allies. We
want Vice President Al Gore to become our spokesman. Some 27 organisations
have already sent him the letter, which is attached at the end of this status
summary. If you agree with their aim, please add your voice, by mailing it
to:

Best regards: Bela Liptak

The Honorable Al Gore
Vice President of the United States
The White House
Washington, D.C. 20001
(E-Mail:

Dear Mr. Vice President,

On the 21st of August, 1993, you wrote to professor Bela Liptak about your
concern for the Danube ecosystem. Today, mankind is approaching an important
precedent: On the 3rd of March, 1997 the International Court of Justice will
start the first international environmental lawsuit in The Hague.
The ICJ will decide a case involving the Danube and the destruction of
its ancient wetland region: the Szigetkoz. This name, losely translated,
means: The region of a thousand islands, yet today there is not a single
island left there, because the water is gone. Still, the implications of this
case go beyond the future of just one river or just the 400 endangered
species of one ancient ecosystem.
This lawsuit will set a precedent for the whole planet and will answer
a much more basic question: Do national governments have the right to do as
they please with our ecosystems, or does mankind as a whole have a right to
protect the rich natural treasures, which belong to all of us?
Mr. Vice President, in 1995, nine international environmental NGOs have
submitted a memorial to ICJ, which its president, the Honorable Mohammed
Bedjaoui has accepted. A Compromise Plan was also submitted to the Court,
which would guarantee the restoration of the ancient Szigetkoz wetlands,
together with fulfilling the water- supply, shipping and energy needs of the
region. For details of this plan and for other aspects of the lawsuit, please
ask Bela Liptak or visit the web-site at: http://www.goodpoint.com/duna.htm
Dear Mr. Gore. It is very important that the first international
environmental lawsuit be given the attention it deserves by the media. The
Foundation to Protect the Hungarian Environment can inform you of the
details. A statement by you, can guarantee that attention. Please make that
statement.

Respectfully yours,

Isn't this the sort of "game" which has the lovely consequence of
national uprising after it reaches its necessary end where loads of
money is collected at the top of the pyramis and it just disappears
.. (Check out Albania today before you become silly enough to pay too
much attention to this)

Andy, for a while I was talking to Mr. Lippai also, but then I gave up.
It is really best to ignore people like him. Fortunately, the vast
majority of both the Hungary and the Magyar list are decent people. I
believe Mr. Lippai is in a constant state of delirium tremens and doesn't
really know what he is saying.

Osoket vezerekhez visszavezetni majdnem lehetetlen.

Just to point out for the sake of recent arrivals to the HUNGARY mailing
list: one objective of this list is to make issues pertaining to Hungary
and Hungarians accessible to those Hungarians and non-Hungarians who are
interested in them but cannot speak/write/read Hungarian.

Hence, while the use of Hungarian is not banned or frowned upon, writing
in English is more conducive to achieving this objective.

Yes, the official government data about the Hungarian economy is available
from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce's WEB page (www.ikm.hu). Here is
a sample of what is there.

DATA OF HUNGARIAN ECONOMY /FIRST SEMESTER 1996/
                                                        1995 1996
Deficit of the balance of current account (USD billion) 2,0 0,9
Deficit or the central budget (HUF million) 202 122
Rise of consumer prices (December-June, in %) 18 14
Increase of the volume of industrial output (in %) 10 1,1
Exports (USD billion ) 5,8 6,1
Imports (USD billion) 7,7 7,6

The slow increase of export, and decline of import is an indication, that
the economy is not booming. So I don't think that Mr Freeman was out of
line when he characterized the economic growth as a "crawl". My
concern is that Hungarians are called pessimist and as having too high
expectations when they are not enthusiastic with the way things going now
under the guidance of the expert government of Dr Horn.
