Most of us are intolerant enough to become leaders, true.  Yet, we lack
slickness and appeal to anyone but ourselves.  This will eventually
prevent us from becoming anything but lobbyists.  Although this is where
the real power is, most of us are probably more interested in the ego-trip
that comes with leadership than we are in pure power per se.

The other factor you did not mention is that most netters are addicts.
Unless we can use the net to launch nukes at people we do not like, for

nothing will ever get done.

Seriously: Came to think of it, Bill Gates would probably make a good 
president or prime minister - anywhere.  I am not talking about his 
(rather doubtful) programming skills or quality of products - but about
his ability as a businessperson - to make his empire continue growing a
long time after most of us had thought it impossible.  Also, you rarely
see him flame people (except current backwards and narrowminded 
politicians), at least when he is not using his pseudonym at aol.com.

I have just explored other soc.culture groups, a sort
of random selection . . . I opened approximately 10
different nationalities (including Romanian, German,
Scottish, Turkish, etc.) and found, to my amazement,
that they just don't compare with soc.culture.magyar
in terms of the number of participants and the kind of
news features that soc.culture.magyar has . . . I am
suitably impressed with soc.cutlure.magyar . . . 

Please, no flames. I am not being chauvinistic here,
just pleasantly surprised at the quantity and quality
of the positings in this group . . . (of course, one
finds some uncivil postings here, too, from time to 
time, but that's life, I guess . . . )

Hi everyone:

I am posting on this bulletin board to inform those interested in the UN 
about a simulation conference run by a group at Harvard to be held in 
Amsterdam from March 24-27, 1996.

This annual conference draws students and young professionals from around 
the world to represent their native countries in one of nine simulated 
UN committees, from the General Assembly, to the Commission on Human 
Rights, to the IMF, to the UN Environment Programme.  Having nationals 
represent their own countries creates an especially authentic simulation 
of the real UN.

The value of the conference does not end in committee.  There are also 
guest speakers, discussion groups, and a Cultural Gala in which delegates 
are invited to share a piece (be it a song, dance, or even a
light-hearted skit) of their cultural heritage with other delegates.

Last year's conference was held in Geneva, drawing over 200 delegates from
nearly 50 countries.  This year, we hope to expand both the size of the
conference and the number of countries represented. 

The committees are led by Directors who spent several months researching 
their topic areas to prepare background material and debate is moderated 
according to the rules of UN procedure.  Participants discuss current 
issues of international interest while getting a feel of how the UN 
actually works.

At the same time, the conference is an opportunity to meet people from 
across the globe who share an interest in international cooperation and 
the role of the UN. I have personally attended the previous  
conference and am eagerly anticipating the upcoming conference in 
Geneva.  The conference is a unique opportunity to not only be 
surrounded by but also to directly interact with a group of interesting 
people with a diverse array of cultural backgrounds.
