As (ibokor) pointed out, the real cause of
confusion is that some surnames are the same as *given names (like Laszlo
in you example). I gather, most of us expat Hungarians are well
accustomed to the given name, surname order. Provided, that your main
audiance is the English speaking world, I recommend, that you ignore the
original Hungarian order. Funny, it may feel......
+ - Information on Szentes? (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

My daughter has just settled in Szentes, Hungary and will be teaching English
at a gimnazium there for at least a year as a part of the "Teach Hungary/
Central European Teaching Program."

Can anyone help me answer two questions:
        1) What things should she see or visit while she is in Szentes?
        2) What institutions might have an Internet connection there so that
we can keep in touch more easily?

Thank you for your help.

The Hungarian alphabet differs only slightly from the English one, in
that we use accents and double dots (umlauts) etc and that two letters
may be combined to form one phonetic sound.

Any word processor worth it's salt, certainly WordPerfect and Microsoft
Word support all these characters and they may be assigned to a keyboard
Macro. I have been using Wordperfect for years, and I have access to
every Hungarian character that exists.

Wordperfect even supports more exotic alphabets, such as Russian, Greek
and Hebrew, so you should have no problem with Hungarian.

Zsuzsa,
since your letter contains no useful information whatsoever for the readers
of this list, please, next time try to constrain yourself to private
letters.
The posts you are talking about and obviously misunderstood have nothing
do with the address.

The letters try to inform the readers of this list, that there are several
services available both from HIX and from the Hungarian-American List,
including archiving other Hungarian newsgroups.

HIX has archives in several various format.
E.g. the freshest articles are available at
http://hix.mit.edu/friss2/
, while the soc.culture.magyar and hun.* groups are under URL:
http://hix.mit.edu/usenet/

The Hungarian Usenet groups are under the http://mineral.umd.edu/usenet/
address in Maryland. Our archive includes the soc.culture.magyar,
bit.listserv.hungary, hun.general, hun.news, hun.lists.katalist and hun.net
groups.

soc.culture.magyar is also available by mail, as you must have read it
in a posting sent in several days ago by the administrators of the
Hungarian-American List.

I would be glad to answer your further questions in private letters.

Dear HUNGARY Readers:

You probably noticed that a couple of error messages made it to the
list from the address. Although it is not the
fault of HIX, I am sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused.

Apparently, the iif.hu server has a non-standard error handling:
it does not reply to the sender address, but
to the list address; moreover, its explanation message is bogus:
it writes "Levele'nek cimzettje ) postafio'kja't
beza'rta.", which would imply is a mailbox
on iif.hu, which is obviously not the case.

I tried to contact the postmaster of that machine. Until then
I disabled the address, so you should not get
any more of these annoyances.

Best Regards,
Jozsef
+ - Re: soc.culture.magyar (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

Mr. Saghy-Szabo is entitled to use HUNGARY (or HIX, for that matter)
for advertising his services. The advertising may induce some folks
to check out his offerings, and, depending on the quality of the material,
some people may even come back for more.

One of the tricks in advertising is to try to come across as the kind
of outfit people want to do business with. At the minimum, the
messages ought to be courteous, to the point, long on information, and
short on testiness. Snide put-downs of one's competitors are, as a
rule, counterproductive. It is also a good idea to post clean messages,
with pointless barf-mail edited out. This will give people a bit of
reassurance that they are dealing with someone who is not entirely
lacking in basic editing skills. After all, you are trying to convince
people to go out of their way to see material you compiled.

So far, I have seen at least half a dozen commercials for Mr. Saghy-
Szabo's services. The campaign seems to have reached the point of
diminishing returns. I think most of us have got the idea. Anyone who
feels an urge to check out Mr. Saghy-Szabo's bulletin board knows where
to find it. I'm sure I am not alone in wishing Mr. Saghy-Szabo great
success in his networking endeavors.

Our system administrators have just upgraded project Glue's mailing
system, that put our mailing services into chaos for about a day.
Since the error messages on this list seem to coincide with our problems,
I checked again for possible bugs. Neither could I find anything in
our regularly distributed mail - non-standard headers, etc - that might have
caused somehow sending messages to "ella", "hix" or "iif" addresses.
Please, notify us immediately if you track the error down to
our domain - umd.edu

Sincerely,
Gotthard
