Phil,
Do you know that it is illegal to make any type of transactions within
Hungary with any currency other than the Hungarian Forint? USD is not
the Hungarian currency! Please refer to prices in HUF, inflation is not
as astronomical that such prices would lose value in a month.
Thanks,
Zoli

Servus is also very commonly used in Slovakia. Since Latin was
for a long time the official language of the multi-national Hungarian
state, I suspect many other latin-derived terms have survived and it
is not due to just one area spreading them.

You have to be joking! How can you say that a language that is created
on the moment, and which has no grammer rules, a vocal of only a few
words, and which exists for lack of a better solution, is an improvement?
And why do you assume Robert Hetzron doesn't prize international relations
because he recognizes that pidgins are impoverished languages? PC has it's
place I suppose, but let's not call nighttime morning just because
nighttime has a selfesteme problem due to lack of sunlight. Folks of the
PC persuasion seem to have trouble pointing out deficiencies in a
cultural context, and it doesn't make sense! Would you call a student
who regularly scores in the 70's despite his best efforts, numerically
challenged?
Pidgins are a compromise in language created because of an immediate need
for communication. Let's not glory scotchtape-and-paper-clip solutions
to problems as better than well planned solutions.

I believe that language is a means to an end -- that end being human
relationship -- and not an end in itself. How that comes to be interpreted
as "PC" I can't imagine.

Typically, but not exclusively, PC types defend all characteristics of minority
groups
or of new ideas as being by their nature better than the established or the
majority.
The impression I got from your post was that you too were declaring that the ne
w
language
which exists in the pigeon is better than the old, horroble, established
language in the
old and horrible, established society.
I still don't see how a makeshift pigeon language can be better than a fully
developed
language, but I do understand your point about valueing relationships, and
thereby
appreciating pigeons.

Jan George Frajkor may well be right about the multiple origins of the term
"szervusz/servus" in the old Monarchy--the term is also extremely common in
Austria itself, although there seem to be fewer variations in pronunciation
than in Hungary.
