Armenia reopens nuclear power station
Source: Reuters
YEREVAN, Reuters via NewsPage : Energy-starved Armenia on Monday
reopened a nuclear power station it closed six years ago shortly
after an earthquake, a government spokesman said.
The Metsamor power station was turned on to allow all the
Soviet-designed systems to be checked, he said.
Armenian officials have said the plant will be monitored for at
least a month before one of its two reactors begins to produce
electricity.
Armenia is in the grip of a serious energy shortage and says it has
to reopen the power station because it has no alternative sources of
energy.

A task force setting up the new European Environment Agency (EEA) has
warned that much
of the data available from individual countries is inadequate for the
organisation's role in
co-ordinating environmental monitoring. The EEA has been charged with
standardising
environmental data as a basis for common environmental regulations.
However, according to
the task force, information from Eastern Europe is particularly
unreliable, while even within the
EU the use of different methods of measurement means it is impossible
to produce reliable
European databases on many important variables, including air, water
and noise pollution, and
the movement of endangered species.
The agency's Executive Director, Domingo Jimenez-Beltran, recently
claimed that about
two-thirds of the EU's directives on environmental reporting were "not
working" because of
inadequate reporting by member states [see ED 1995/1].

Performance Measurement for Sustainable Development:
Compendium of Experts, Initiatives and Publications
The International Institute for Sustainable Development's Measurements and
Indicators of Sustainable Development Performance program has recently
completed it's publication "Performance Measurement for Sustainable
Development: Compendium of Experts, Initiatives and Publications".
This publication (approximately 300 pages, and listing over 200 entries),
profiles the experts, as
well as the major institutions and projects with an interest in indicators
to monitor sustainable
development performance. Annotated bibliographies of more than 125 of the
more relevant
publications in this field are provided as well. This publication also
incorporates the work of our
earlier report on SD indicator initiatives in Canada, "Measuring Sustainable
Development
Performance: Canadian Initiatives", which listed 57 governmental, academic,
non-governmental,
multilateral and private sector projects and institutions. Both these
publications are now presented
in one volume which is available for widespread distribution.

Kedves (Bobko') Csaba,
Ez a 120 milliard kb. 10%-a a koltsegvetesnek. Az elso kerdes, hogy
forditanak-e egyaltalan osszesen ennyit kornyezetvedelemre. Felek,
Igen politikus-tudomanyos hozzaallas.
Mondok mast.
Genfbol Pestre sincs, ezert vegig vezetek. Ausztrian keresztul ugyan
olyan helyre koltoztem, ahol szegenyes a tomegkozlekedes. En is azt
varom, ha majd lesz helyettesito, akkor atszallok. Elobb nem, mert
nincs hova. Es ez sem az autosok hibaja. Lehetne kamion- es szemely-
autoszallito vonatokat beallitani a forgalomba.
lyukainak betomese : csaladi potlek, nyugdij, bankkonszolidacio,
autosok altal megtett kilometereket lefordithatnank a fenti szukseg-
letekre.
