Does the simplicity come from the fact that no one's
agreeing with your cowboy (sell 'em death, if they're
fools enough to pay for it) capitalist approach to
poisonous substances?

Because, perhaps, it's not propaganda.

Sorry, Amos, but the latest eyewitness, pop, news from ABC News doesn't do
much fo me. Maybe if you told us about an article in the New England
Journal of Medicine or even the New York Times your information would have
more credibility. Will you be quoting from the World Weekly News next?

But long term addiction can and does. And because tobacco is addictive,
and extremely difficult for many to give it up, long term exposure to all
the chemicals in a cigarette will cause cancer in some of the smokers.

Look up some stats on income, education, and smoking, and you'll see that
there are fewer smokers among the well-to-do, teenage rebellion not
withstanding.

We'll never agree on whether or not tobacco should be banned. However,
just think of all the money that's going up in smoke in Hungary. Surely,
that money could be put to better use. And think of the medical cost
savings, too.

Hi Johanne,

I have just read the article in Nepszabadsag, Andy's message promted
me to do so, according to which a "passive euthanasia" is proposed by
the government in an overall reform of the medical service. It is far
from becoming a law. The government has agreed on the package, but it
has not been submitted to parliament for action as yet.
Still the Hungarian Medical Association has sent a protesting letter
both to the President and the Speaker but not necessarily about that
portion.
   I hope this helps,
                       Amos

Hi Everybody,

I have also read a report in the Magyar Nemzet about this. As I have
written in my other message, the proposal didn't even reach parliament.
So it is far from becoming a law.But it seems that there is going to be
a semantic fight about the question: different people or organizations
read/understand the proposal in a different way.
The Catholic Church is, of course, against it in any form or shape.
But when has the Catholic Church been for the welfare of the Hungarian
people? And the question will be used for political purposes by the dif-
ferent parties. This is not surprising either.
Still it is way too early to jump to conclusions, Andy,
                                                           Amos

We may all agree that tobacco is a poisonous substance, but we
differ from you in thinking that banning tobacco altogether would do any
good. In fact, if I understand Joanne's and Amos's poisiton correctly, they
agree with me that such a ban would not foolish. The most likely result of
such a ban would be that the illegal substance's price would skyrocket and
some "dealers" would become extremely rich. See, cocaine, heroine, hasish,
whatever dealers. And people would kill for the stuff. ESB

Yes, Andy read it in BLA. BLA is the abbreviation for Batthyany
Lajos Alapitvany which, I understand is an MDF-affiliated foundation. Among
other things the foundation also publishes a very useful "reader's digest of
the daily press." Although I heard from someone that the BLA's news service
is supposed to be biased because BLA is an MDF foundation, I must say that I
have never noticed any such bias. And as you all know I am not exactly a fan
of MDF!! By the way, you can subscribe by writing to:

You may also want to try www.hvg.hu. HVG has expanded its Internet
coverage about two weeks ago and among other things the site also has a
daily digest of news based on Magyar Hirlap and Vilaggazdasag. In addition,
you can reach the Hungarian radio's hourly news service. If your Hungarian
is not good enough, www.hvg.hu also has an English section.

In addition to Nepszabadsag!!! Amos who now has more time and a new
computer is discovering the joys of the Internet! I am pleased. You may want
to know that there area 132 Hungarian daily newspapers and other periodical
publications on the Internet! I must say Hungary is becoming much more
active on the Internet than some other countries with a great deal of more
resources: France, Italy, Germany, to mention a few. Within a couple of
years all high schools will be connected to the Internet. I think that this
is fantastic and in the long run it will benefit the country greatly.

I don't know if others read this new law in Hungary.
Apparently Euthanasia came into law, with some provision to control it.

And in the Magyar Nemzet:

>A "passziv eutanaziaval" kapcsolatban a katolikus egyhaz allaspontjat
 ismertetve
>Jelenits Istvan piarista teologus lapunknak kijelentette: mar az elnevezes sem

In brief: According a teologist interviewed by the Magyar Nemzet, the Catholic
 Church
does not consider the 'passive euthanasia' as euthanasia and always accepted th
e
 right
to suspend the artificial extention of the human life. However they reject the
 idea
of 'active euthanasia'.
