I would like to know if there is such a thing as a Hungarian Library
Association. If so, could anyone tell me its name? And any other information
you could give (e.g. the major library science publication in Hungary,
the name of the person heading the Lib. Assoc., etc.) would be much
appreciated.
I thank you in advance.

I have been trying to arrange a visit to Magyarorszag for June of this
summer, but airline rates seem to be unusually high. Unless I can find
a less expensive ticket than the ones I've been quoted, I fear I won't
be able to make the trip. Does anyone out there know of a consolidator
or travel package that would make my visit possible for less than the
$950-$1000 I've been hearing about. I should mention that these prices
have been with regard to a Chicago or Milwaukee departure. My
preference would be to leave from either of those points, although I
would consider St. Louis, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, or others.
I truly any appreciate any help or advice you might be able to give me.

Dear magyar student,

Here are my honest responses, as you have requested.
In fact, you have addressed a special need in your request which
I would like to discuss. You asked that your respondents answer
the questions in a manner of speaking to friends. This is
certainly needed, since I have yet to meet an american who
could open his mind to others at a first meeting. They find
it difficult to express their true thoughts for reasons I have
not found able to comprehend. Also, they are quite
uncomfortable when those in discussion with them open their
true thoughts. They realize the fact that their conversation
companion has opened their own mind, thus! opening a window
into the soul of themselves. This frightens them and they are
unable to carry on any conversation with this person for fear of
having to be honest and open.

What manner of conversation is worth having unless it
bears the soul of the speaker? So I commend you for
asking your audience to "speak as with friends", but it also
does not increase any optimism I have about the general public.

> The questions:
> 1. What are your first thoughts when you hear this word: optimism?
I think of people who smile no matter what. This annoys me.
I believe the correct way to live is to respond to life in
the appropriate manner. For instance, if you are heartbroken,
then you *should* be sad for awhile. It is only in this manner
that we can learn of ourselves. Responding to the external
stimuli in the most natural manner is what I call "authentic".
Therefore, in my day to day life, I am authentic. I am sad when
I need to be. I get happy only when I *know* something will
occur, not what *may* be. I go about my business in order to
accomplish my goals. Let me expand. I do not 'hope' for the
future. I set my goals, I go after them. There is no
optimism for me. I relish in the daily tasks of working
towards goals and this is better than optimism.

> 2. Would you say you are an optimistic person? Why or why not?
No, I think optimism is false. There is so much of it here
it is disgusting. It is easy to equate it with stupidity, but
        I try not to.

> 3. Do you agree with the saying that 'life is unendurable without hope'?
For some people, yes. For me, if things look bad, I let the
emotion overrun me. Then I write poetry or I paint and after
the pain is over, I look back on what I have created and see that
the pain was beneficial. So I use the present to get to a better
        future. I don't use optimism.
