Hi,

Where does one find this "Hungarian Pronunciation Tutor"?
Thanks.

I will be in Budapest in September for a conference which will be held
in the Grand Corvinus-Kempinski hotel. The rooms there are too expensive
for me. My other possibilities are the Astoria or the Taverna. Can you
tell me which one is closer to the Corvinus-Kempinski? Any other helpful
information about these hotels would be appreciated. I am very grateful
for any help.

Unquestionably you want the Astoria. Not only is it walking distance from
Kempinski but it is also walking distance from the river Danube and Vaci
Street, the undisputed "main drag" of Budapest.

Both are near. Taverna, however is newer and located in a less trafficky
area in Vaci St which is 'walkers only'. Astoria may evoke the glory of
old ages but AC? I do not exactly know. Nora

I think that Ba'tor (Brave), for a male especially, is a lovely name. It
sounds good in English as well as in Hungarian. It is easy to pronounce--the
"a'" is very close to the "a" in "father." Stress on the first syllable.

Have fun with your vizsla--they are lovely dogs.

our pets--well, the dogs at least--were always given hungarian names:

betya'r (he was a komondor) and vi'te'sz (he was a german shepard). these are
great "strength/spirit" names:-) oh, and there was kocos (she was a puli):
her name falls in the "anti-beauty" catagory:-)

one of my two cats is named kormos. this falls in the "grace/beauty".

In regard to the following:

an amusing aside to the story about "Kormos" being a name
associated with 'grace/beauty' and suitable for dogs or cats.

Peter Kormos is a member of the Ontario Parliament for the New
Democratic Party (socialist). He is of Slovak origin and still speaks
the language, although clearly the name has some connection with
Hungarian.
Kormos was considered a real up-and-comer for his party until the
Toronto Sun newspaper, which regularly prints girls in bathing suits
as the 'Sunshine girl' and half-naked young men as the 'Sunshine boy'
printed a picture of Peter Kormos as the Sunshine boy. He was not
unclothed or anything... he was in his office with his shirt on.
However, socialists having little sense of humor and a great sense
of political correctness, took umbrage at a member of their party
stooping to such sexist practices as being chosen Sunshine boy. He
was censured by his party and dropped from possible cabinet posts.
The moral: Kormos does have something to do with grace/beauty.
It is suitable for humans as well as dogs and cats.
It gets your picture in the paper.
It is not fit for a proper socialist dog,cat or human.

Hope your pet is a Milton Friedman fan.

Actually, "kormos" means "sooty" in English. I leave it to you if it is
in the "grace/beauty" category, but I doubt that it would be best suited for
a fawn-coloured vizsla.

OK. Thanks. Will do. But now I have to go home so I can
take my kid to summer ballet. John's done it again--gone
out of town just when a new chauffering need arose. If I
          didn't know better.......

Finally....someone comes who understands how to fight the notion that
crime pays, and it isn't appreciated. A better post would have been to
tell everyone not to do anything that buys an audience with the good
judge.
