********************************

Today (Mon, 6 Apr 1998) is the opening of the first of the two sessions held un
der
the 'Internet Conference on Integrated Bio-Systems (ICIBS)'. This session will
have
12 papers, each paper discussion will last for 4 weeks. The first session ends
in June and the second session will continue from October to mid December.

--------------------------------

It is with a great pleasure and honor for me to open this conference
jointly with Prof. Tarcisio Della Senta (director of the Inst of Advanced
Studies (UNU/IAS) of the UN University (Tokyo)). ICIBS is a unique virtual
conference as it offers to each of the 620 participants the equal
opportunity to participate actively rather than be just a name in a passive
audience at a large conference venue. ICIBS could just well be the first
Internet conference of its kind in its subject area to combine the use of
mailing list and WWW resources to provide access to pictures, illustrations
and texts of papers on the web and permitting interactions of partcipants
and authors via Internet (i.e. e-mail mailing lists and the web). The
preparation of ICIBS started 6 months ago and the effort would not be
possible without the help and feedbacks from the members of conference
committees, the cooperation of the authors, secretarial assistance from
UNU/IAS and its co-sponsors. Co-sponsors like the the AEON Foundation
(Japan) and the Research Institute for Subtropics (Japan) are providing an
essential support to cover communication costs for authors from developing
countries and groups from the Pacific Islands and islands with subtropical
climates.

The Internet Conference on Integrated Bio-Systems is an activity of UNU/IAS
project called Zero Emissions Research Initiatives (UNU/ZERI) which
promotes the redesigning human activities to achieve maximum productivity
with minimal waste generation. It advocates a shift in our concept from
linear production models where wastes generation is accepted as the norm,
to integrated systems where by-products and wastes are always recycled or
converted and utilized as resources for new production processes. In its
expanded form, "zero emissions" targets on zero wastes for human society as
a whole. UNU/ZERI project started in 1995 at the United Nations University
in Tokyo and this zero emissions concept which is also commonly referred to
as "ZERI", is now adopted by industries, foundations, institutions and
NGO's as well as communities and governments in both developing and
developed countries.

The theme of this Internet Conference focuses on the use and conversion of
organic matter in residues into value-added products and the use of
wastewaters as resources in the process of their treatments. The scope
covers applications in agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, industries,
waste treatment and management, urban and rural human settlements and in
many cases offers examples where different activities and sub-systems are
integrated, thus the phrase "integrated bio-systems". While the primary
objective of ICIBS is to provide access to documents, to facilitate
interactions and to foster greater awareness of this subject area and its
contributions to sustainable development, a secondary objective is to draw
the attention and the role of funding agencies to support projects
proposals on work related to integrated bio-systems.

On behalf of UNU/IAS and the UNESCO Microbial Resources Centre, I like to
welcome all of you to participate actively at this conference (see below
for programme).

Mr. Eng-Leong "Jacky" Foo
ICIBS Secretariat
and Director, UNESCO Microbial Resources Centre, Stockholm
