Referring to my Feb 21 e-mail on receipt of an exhaustive report from HTMH,
via their pres. Dr.Torzsok Erika, I sent out English language summaries from
their 1996 report. I have received a number of questions, comments,
acknowledgements since and today I finished encapsulating these in a reply
to HTMH. The "snailmail" transmittal is three dense pages (in Hungarian)
plus another three pages of the Romania report (in English), thus too long
for e-mail . The main points were as follows.
Re Romania asked about why Csangos were ignored. Asked for an updating of
their report considering the deep political changes there. Status of further
mesasures ? Re Slovakia reiterated the gap between their own Constitution,
the bilateral treaty and the language law. Where can we appeal ? Who has
influence ? Asked why in reviewing Hungarians in the West, Canada was
largely ignored. Suggested that in reviewing Hungarian media abroad they
start considering the internet and its increasing usage by first, second
etc. generation Hungarians. Asked more questions re media penetration in the
Carpathian basin. In Croatia, Slovenia the small Hungarian population gives
little basis for community development. What can be done to build more
bridges into Hungary itself ? Suggested that language is not the only binder
for Hungarian traditions and culture. Witness intense English-language
participation on Hungarian Usenets.
If someone wants to get the full text, send me a request and will try to
forward as an e-mail attachment.
Andy.

To all:

My most sincere personal thanks for all the messages directed to the
attention of Hungarian Team, of which the final count is 63.

This am, all of your Emails were taped to the door of their banquet hall
before breakfast for all to read. Reactions were amazing! To the point
that each of the athletes requested copies to take home with them, and to
submit to the Hungarian Press, not to mention the 'awe's. Opening
ceremony is tomorrow. Races begin the 21st. I'll keep you posted the best
I can. (Still maintain though that your best bet is the website for
immediate results).

Thanks 'muchly'! Wish that you could all enjoy the first hand reaction of
your extended effort - but since you cannot, hope this is of some minute
help. For any desiring to extend the same to the Canadian and/or the US
teams please feel free to use my Email. I now have all the locations for
all three for distribution purposes. (Btw; the Canadian team looks
awesome!!!!! ... ) Have not had the opportunity to meet with any of the US
members, save the team leader but are staying in the same hotel as are the
Hungarians, so I will. Another btw - the Canadians, Australians, South
Africa and the Mexicans each enjoy a commonality - Hungarian coaches ...
Best, Aniko
