PLEASE BRING THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF POTENTIAL STUDENTS

PHD STUDENTSHIP AT THE MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL'S COGNITIVE
DEVELOPMENT UNIT IN LONDON (CDU)

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship, starting October
1996, financed by the Down's Syndrome Association Studentship
Scheme awarded to Professor Annette Karmiloff-Smith at the above
MRC unit. The candidate would work directly with Professor Karmiloff-
Smith, as well as consulting with other CDU scientists, on infants and
young children with Down's syndrome, compared to other phenotypes
such as Williams syndrome. The work would involve traditional
habituation/preference studies in infancy, the use of non-invasive
measurement of brain activity, as well as some connectionist modelling.
Appropriate training will be provided where necessary. Expertise in
these areas is not essential, but an interest in and commitment to the
importance of developmental cognitive neuroscience is.

The CDU is a full-time research unit with close contacts with the
Psychology Department at University College London where the student
would be officially registered. The successful applicant would benefit
from all the postgraduate facilities and courses of University College
London which confers the PhD degree. S/he would also have access to
CDU research facilities, to our very up-to-date library and to our regular
in-house theoretical seminars. The CDU scientists are specialised in both
normal and abnormal development from birth to adolescence in a wide
range of cognitivo-linguistic domains of enquiry. We have full infant
laboratory testing facilities and have recently installed a state-of-the-
art ERP laboratory for the non-invasive measurement from infancy
through to adulthood of functional brain activity .

Candidates with or expecting to obtain a First or Upper Second class
degree, not necessarily in development but in any of the following
fields: experimental psychology, cognitive development, biology,
cognitive science, or cognitive neuroscience, should apply to the address
below IMMEDIATELY with full CV. They should also obtain application
forms from University College London whose entrance criteria they
must also meet, and return these by 29th February 1996 latest.
